The Bonanza Gear Uplock Roller-Block Dance!

Last annual I had some problems with my gear... We found that the uplock cable had frayed almost all the way through!

During replacement we ran into some problems , but quickly resolved them.

After replacement we had to go through the adjustment procedure for the uplocks... This turned into a learning experience :}

While doing the adjustment I decided to take some photos showing the operation of the uplock system as the gear is extended...

Note that you can click on any photo to see the full size image.
The thumbnails that you see here are about 20k each.  The full images are over 400k.

Here the gear is fully retracted.
The uplock block, just to the right and below the roller with the red zerk cover,
is against the stop on the gear arm and has .015" clearance with the roller.
The cable is tight, with about 55 lb.. tension.
The uplock release spring is just visible in the upper right, just above the cover.

Close up of the block and roller.
Because of possible conflicts between the grease fitting cap and the uplock cable the cap has been removed.

Here the gear is starting to extend.
The uplock block is off the stop on the gear leg and is now touching the roller.  The spring is pulling the block back.
The cable pulls the block into the lock position, the spring retracts it, thats why its important to check your springs at annual for corrosion and replace if necessary.
At this point the gear hasnt moved much at all.

The uplock block is clear of the roller now and the gear is free to extend.

The gear is started down.
You can see the release spring at the right of the photo.

As the gear extends in the next few photos you can see the knee straightening out and the uplock block retracting.

Things happen fast now, the uplock block is fully retracted and the gear is well on its way down.

The gear is almost fully down, the spring is visible above the strut.

The gear is down and locked.
Its safe to land now! <g>
